Symmetry & Asymmetry. October 2024.
Symmetry
Symmetry is inherently associated with balance and order, offering a sense of predictability and stability. These qualities are often valued in systems. Predictability can lead to monotony and stagnation.
When expressed to misfits - is an overreliance on conventional thinking.
Conventional mindsets prioritize fitting in and adhering to established norms. Individuals seeking external validation may pursue "consensus ideas and consensus career tracks" to impress others or to address a place instrinsically that seeks security. But the downside is that this pursuit of conformity can stifle individuality and discourage the exploration of novel ideas. Traditional education systems often reinforce this by promoting passive learning and discouraging students from questioning established wisdom.
My parents were called to the principals office when I questioned my professors mathematical method in third grade. While symmetrical systems provide structure, they can inhibit creativity and independent thought.
In my work, a focus on symmetry can result in repetitive and uninspired outcomes. Emphasizing consistent design may hinder innovation by replicating existing paradigms rather than exploring new possibilities.
Asymmetry
Asymmetry breaks the mold of predictability, introducing elements of surprise and excitement. It is fun and spontaneous, it embodies the essence of creativity and the willfulness to venture into uncharted territories. Independent-minded individuals often thrive in asymmetrical environments, where they can challenge conventional thinking and pursue less predictable paths.
Embracing asymmetry allows for the fusion of diverse ideas to create something new, fostering innovation and altering perspectives. Assymmetry values the unknown and the unpredictable, viewing them as opportunities for breakthroughs rather than sources of fear.
Asymmetry serves as a catalyst for disruption and change. Introducing ambiguity and contradiction can enrich projects, adding layers of complexity that challenge conventional aesthetics.
