Instagram's mission and recent backlash during COVID started a wave of petitions to make Instagram a place for friends.

Existing behaviour and pain points

When a host is planning a hangout they have to go through the pressure of picking the right people and thinking about complex social dynamics of their group. Attendees also feel lost here with overwhelmingnees of endless messages and often tune out.

Exploring surfaces that feel impromptu

After establishing our design principles, our next task was to audit Instagram's architecture and pick a surface that feels impromptu.

3 step solution - Impromptu Hangouts

We built functional prototypes in Origami to represent the end-end flow of hosting an impromptu hangout using stickers from stories.
