Context

Instagram's mission has three key pillars - brands, creators and friends. But what's been happening recently there’s been backlash and started a wave of petitions to make Instagram a place for friends.

Focus on Impromptu Events

Through a competitive audit, we found emerging trends through user research and social & event apps that narrowed our focus beyond simply “Facebook Events” on IG.

Existing behaviour and pain points

We found that sometimes DM’s are utilized for impromptu event planning, but pose significant pain points both on the host and attendee side.

Exploring surfaces that feel impromptu

After establishing our design principles, our next task was to audit Instagram's architecture and pick a surface that feels impromptu.

Our solution for Impromptu Hangouts

We built functional prototypes in Origami to represent the end-end flow of hosting an impromptu hangout using stickers from stories.
